The short answer: most local businesses do one or two of the six things local SEO takes now. The other four sit wide open. The competitor who picks them up gets the customer. The six: an active Google Business Profile, local schema, a consistent name/address/phone, fresh reviews, geo-targeted keywords, and being cited by AI.
ZorvaLabs' April 2026 breakdown is blunt about it: most shops do 1-2 of the six and leave the rest on the table. And the stakes got higher this year. ListMG's 2026 local SEO trends report says AI Overviews now appear in 80%+ of local searches. The customer doesn't always click a website anymore. The AI names a business, and that business gets the call.
A homeowner in Simpsonville doesn't search "landscaper" and scroll like it's 2019. They ask Google or ChatGPT who does paver patios nearby. The answer names two or three businesses. If yours isn't one of them, the customer never sees your site.
For a service business, this is the whole game. Nobody impulse-buys a roof. The decision happens before the click.
Open ChatGPT and Perplexity. Ask the question a customer would. "Best plumber in Greenville SC." "HVAC repair in Greer." "Landscaper that answers the phone in Easley." If your name doesn't show up, that's your share of AI voice right now. That's the number that decides who gets the call.
Then fix the pillar that's easiest to skip: answer your last ten reviews, make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere, and add one page that answers a real question plainly. That's a start most of this market never gets to.
