Direct answer: a DIY builder can look cheap and still lose jobs. Surmado (Aug 5, 2026) puts DIY website builders at about $17–$50 a month. Foundgrove (May 12, 2026) puts typical service-business sites at only 1–2% conversion, while Unbounce’s landing-page median sits near 6.6%. Impact Marketing Solutions (Jul 8, 2026), citing eDesign Interactive’s look at 200+ plumber, HVAC, electrician, and roofer sites, still shows load under 2 seconds near 32% conversion, 3–5 seconds near 18%, and over 5 seconds near 6%. Single-field “Get a quote” forms land around 12%. Three fields fall to about 4%. Five or more fields land at 1–2%.
So the monthly fee is not the real bill. The slow page and long form are.
A Mauldin landscaper on a $29/mo template still pays when a Fountain Inn homeowner bounces after three seconds. PERC Engage (Mar 9, 2026) puts about 60% of local service searches on mobile, says click-to-call lifts conversion about ~28%, and reports 53% leave after a load longer than 3 seconds. Mobile forms with four fields or fewer convert about 160% better.
If the phone number is buried, the form asks for a novel, and the first screen crawls on LTE in Greer traffic, the $17–$50 “savings” is theater.
Having a domain is common now. Our September 10, 2026 Maps pull for HVAC in Greenville returned 0 of 20 with no website. Our September 7 landscaping pull still found 4 of 20 with no site (about 20%), including shops around Easley. Most ranked peers already have live .com or .site domains.
In trades where everyone has a site, the DIY vs custom fight is not “online or not.” It is who gets the call.
2026 guides keep professional builds high:
A South Carolina agency we verified in August 2026 listed $1,750 to build, $550–725/mo for maps, and $950/mo for SEO.
You do not need a five-figure brochure to beat a weak Wix page. You need a fast page, a short path to call, and a Google profile that stays current.
DIY tools can ship some of that. Most owners never finish the setup. The template looks done. The conversion work is not.
Quick test: open your site on cellular. If the phone number is not tappable in about two seconds, the $29/mo builder fee is not the problem.
We price for Upstate trades on purpose:
One-time-only is always an option. No monthly commitment required to get the site.
If you already have a modern site that just does not get found, the first touch is Care, not a rebuild. If you have no site or a slow outdated one, rebuild first.
DIY can cost $17–$50 a month and still convert like a 1–2% brochure. The July 2026 trade-site numbers (32% under 2s vs 6% over 5s; 12% short forms vs 1–2% long ones) and Foundgrove’s 1–2% vs ~6.6% landing median are the reason. In Greenville, most ranked HVAC shops already have domains. Landscaping still has some no-site shops. Either way, the job is the same: load fast, make the phone easy, keep Google current.
A cheap builder is fine if it does that. Most do not.
