AI Is Now a Top-3 Local Recommendation Channel. FAQ Schema Can Lift Citations About 28%

Local Launch · Sep 2026 · 4 min read

Direct answer: people already ask AI who to hire. SeoProfy (Jun 26, 2026) ranks ChatGPT and other AI tools as the third-most-popular source of local business recommendations, behind Google and Facebook. The same write-up says AI Overviews cut average click-through by about 58%, and cites Search Engine Land on FAQ and Article schema lifting AI citations about 28%. Seotal (Jul 13, 2026) boils the “AI-ready” local stack down to LocalBusiness + Service + FAQ schema, a complete Google Business Profile, matching name/address/phone, and plain service copy AI can quote.

If a Simpsonville HVAC shop still has a thin homepage and no FAQ block, ChatGPT has little to name. Google’s answer box has little to lift. The neighbor with reviews that mention “AC repair in Greer” keeps the job.

The channel moved. Most trade sites did not.

AI is not a side channel anymore. It sits next to Maps and Facebook when someone needs a plumber in Mauldin or a pressure washer in Fountain Inn.

That matters because fewer people click through. SeoProfy’s 58% CTR drop on AI Overview results is the blunt version. You can rank and still lose the call if the answer names someone else.

Our recent Greenville Maps pulls show how common “having a site” already is. HVAC on September 10: 0 of 20 page-one shops with no website. Landscaping on September 7: still 4 of 20 with no site, including shops near Easley. In crowded trades, the fight is citation and conversion, not “do you have a domain.”

What “AI-ready” actually means

Seotal’s list is boring on purpose:

  1. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ schema on the live pages
  2. Complete Google Business Profile — categories, services, hours, photos, posts
  3. NAP consistency across the site, GBP, and directories
  4. Passage-friendly service copy — short answers a model can lift without guessing
  5. Service-named reviews — “roof leak in Travelers Rest,” not “great guy!”

Google’s own complete-profile numbers (via Seotal): a full profile is about 2.7× more likely to be seen as reputable and about 70% more likely to get a visit. SOCi (also cited there) puts reviews near ~20% of local-pack weight and about a 2.8% conversion lift per 10 new reviews.

None of that is a chatbot widget. It is structure.

FAQ schema is the cheap citation lever

Most Greenville trade sites still skip a real FAQ. Owners answer the same five questions on the phone every week. Those answers almost never sit on the page in plain text with markup.

A simple block works:

Mark it up. Keep the answers short. That is the 28% citation lever SeoProfy points at, not a new ad budget.

Quick test: open your homepage. If a customer’s top five phone questions are not answered in plain text with FAQ markup, AI has nothing clean to cite.

Front desk tools got cheap. The site still has to feed them.

Live product pages from September 12 still show DIY AI front-desk floors in the open: Trillet at $149/mo (150 minutes, calendar booking, keep your number), Boei from $19/mo (chat + book + WhatsApp/email/SMS), Chatoo from about €9.99–€19.99/mo on Starter and near €49.99 on Growth. Chatoo’s own claim: up to 1 in 3 callers hang up and dial a competitor instead of leaving voicemail.

Cheap software does not fix a site AI cannot read. If the bot cannot pull real services, cities, and hours from your pages, it guesses. Guessing loses trust on the first call from a Pelzer homeowner.

What Local Launch ships

We keep the offer simple for Upstate trades:

Day-one builds include LocalBusiness / Service / FAQ schema and extractable service FAQs so AI has something real to cite. Care keeps the profile and review velocity moving. The receptionist is trained on the live pages, not a bare login.

One-time-only is always on the table. If you already have a modern site that just does not get found, Care is the first touch. No site or a dead outdated one gets the rebuild first.

A South Carolina agency we verified in August 2026 listed $1,750 to build, $550–725/mo for maps, and $950/mo for SEO. We undercut that stack on purpose.

Bottom line

AI is already a top-3 local recommendation channel. AI Overviews cut clicks. FAQ and Article schema can lift citations about 28%. Complete profiles and service-named reviews still move the pack. Greenville HVAC is mostly fully sited; landscaping still has gaps. Either way, the next step is the same: make the site citable, keep Google current, then add call coverage if you still miss the phone.

The stack is boring. That is why it works.
