Direct answer: before you rewrite service copy for AI answers, confirm crawlers can open the page and the facts on it are still true. Search Engine Journal published a September 21, 2026 session summary with Whitespark founder Darren Shaw and Duda's Russ Jeffery on building local pages AI systems can find and trust. Shaw's line is blunt: you cannot show up in an AI response if the AI cannot access the site. For a Mauldin plumber or a Greer HVAC shop, that means robots.txt, leftover noindex tags, Cloudflare bot settings, and old "-v2" URLs matter before another content package does.
Our October 3, 2026 research pass (titles and URLs only) found the same theme next to AI-ready website guides, multi-agent marketing platforms from about $139–$199/mo list, and a crowded AI front-desk category. The practical job for Upstate trades is still access plus accurate service pages — not another dashboard.
Shaw and Jeffery walked the boring stuff first:
None of that needs a national agency stack. It needs a short audit and honest service pages.
If you run pressure washing out of Simpsonville or landscaping from Travelers Rest, do this before buying another AI tool:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| robots.txt and noindex | A leftover block zeros out content spend |
| Cloudflare / host AI-bot settings | Default blocks are common and quiet |
| View-source on a service page | Phone, cities, and FAQs must appear without waiting on scripts |
| Old clone URLs (-old, v2, /home) | Stale name-address-phone (NAP) facts feed AI answers |
| Schema vs page vs Google Business Profile | Phone, hours, and area served must match in all three |
| Named proof on the page | Rating, review count, license — written in text, not only a badge |
Then write the answers customers already ask: Do you serve Fountain Inn? Same-day or next-day? Warranties? After-hours? Jeffery's low-tech tip still wins — ask the owner what people call about every week.
Local note: a Greer painter does not lose the next job because the homepage lacks a design-award hero. They lose it when a bot cannot read the service page, the number is wrong on an old URL, and the competitor with plain HTML answers first.
Primary source for the crawl-access checklist: SEJ — How To Build Local Pages AI Systems Can Find And Trust (Sep 21, 2026).
We ship defaults on day one, then keep a short weekly Care schedule:
Local price check (not a national average): Saluda Digital's pricing page has listed about $1,750 to build and $550–$725/mo for maps work (bands we logged August 30 and again with October research). Useful anchor. Not a claim about every Greenville shop.
If the site is ©2016 or missing, fix crawlable pages first. If the site is already solid, the next gap is usually matching facts across page, schema, and Google Business Profile — then the weekly listing and review work.
SEJ's session starts earlier than most AI-tool pitches: can the bot open the page, and are the facts still right? Greenville shops win with crawlable HTML, matching name-address-phone details, plain-text proof, and service pages that name Mauldin, Greer, and Fountain Inn. Check access before you fund another rewrite.
